Humility!!

I have a friend. We've been friends since 9 monthe before we were born. She is my age, just a few months older than me. This friend is different, though. No, she's not Special Ed or anything, actually, she's far from it. She's SUPER book smart. All A's every year she's ever been in school. But, like I said, she's different. She's not quite as mature as the rest of the people our age. She doesn't have many friends becaudse, well, she can get really annoying. I have tried and tried again to be nice to her but I just can't. Sometimes she drives me completely up the wall. My mom has noticed this, and she has watched me be pretty mean to this friend. So, last night, she talked to me about it., She told me I needed to be nicer. I told her I would try harder. But, when I thought about it more, I realized why I just can't be nice to her. I am full of myself. I try to be SO cool, like I'm SO much better than her. I have learned an amazing lesson of humility through this. The perfect example of humility is, of course, Jesus. In John 13:1-7(which you should read), Jesus washes the disciples' feet. Now, I'm gonna tell you. I hate feet. I hate touching people's feet, I hate people touching my feet, and I hate people's feet touching my feet. So, for me, washing someone's feet would be a big deal. See, in Bible times, the roads weren't paved. They didn't have cars. And they wore sandals everywhere. You can imagine how completely nasty washing someone's feet if they walked around like that would be. Washing feet was such a low job that Jewish servants didn't do it. They got the lowest servants, the Gentiles, to do it. So, you can see how weird it would be to see your Rabi, teacher, bending down to wash your feet. That, my friends, is humility. This took place at the Last Supper, the last dinner before Jesus's death. He knew Judas was about to betray him, but did He wash Judas's feet? Of course! How many of you would truly do something like that to someone who is about to lead people to kill you? I know I'd have a pretty hard time with that. I would tell them there is no was I'd be touching their nasty feet. But this is what is so amazing about this story. Jesus was perfectly selfless. So I challenge you this week to show some humility to that person that just irks you. It could be a teacher, a parent, a sibling, or a classmate. Whoever it is, ask the Lord to help you be humble and kind to them, and, if they're not a believer, pray that you'll be a witness to them!
